Aim for taking GATE exam varies from candidate to candidate. Students from private engineering colleges try to get into M.Tech in order to have stamp of the better known institutions and for them reasonable percentile serves the purpose. On the other hand, students studying in well established institutes may aim to get into IIT or other equivalent institutions. For them very high percentile is essential.
Normally 3 to 4 months of serious study will be sufficient for the preparation.
Those students who are in final year have to schedule their studies as semester exam in winter and other engagements may absorb lot of time.
First of all make a proper strategy before starting preparation of the examination.
You have to choose the subject and study as per the syllabus mentioned in the GATE brochure.
Collect the Syllabus for the GATE exam.
Collect all the relevant books for the subject. This collection must include the books for Fundamental and basic concepts as well as for specific problems, guide book for GATE and previous year question papers.
Always try to go through the standard books which are easily available and in which you can easily understand the concepts. This will improve your learning ability.
Mean time you should be in touch with some GATE experienced persons for proper guidance.
Read syllabus and question papers carefully so that it will easy for you to make a proper approach.
Start preparing from the initial topics i.e. the basic ones and note down the basic concepts (definitions, unit, dimension etc.) as well as necessary theories, formulae etc.
Try to solve as many problems as possible from different book as well as try to find more and more tricks.

Results of qualified candidates in GATE will give All India Rank and indicate percentile score. For example, a percentile score of 99 means you are in the top 1% category of the candidates who appeared for GATE.
Candidates who get less than 70 percentile get no score card.
After publication of GATE results, students must apply to individual Institutes to get their application forms.
Institutes advertise M.Tech admissions in leading newspapers from 1st April till end July. However some Institutes do not advertise and therefore students have to get the forms themselves.
Admission in the Institute is based on GATE percentile.

New GATE Examination Pattern - Vaniinstitute Bangalore

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration, which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions. Each question will have four choices for the answer.

From the year 2010, the pattern of GATE question paper has been changed from the previous pattern where 55 Technical questions and 10 questions of General Aptitude will be included that will carry 100 marks. These questions should be attempted in 3 hours.

The Question paper pattern of GATE 2010 :

1) From Q.1 to Q.25: It will carry one mark each where subtotal will be 25 marks (Each question will carry one mark for each correct answer). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each WRONG answer.

2) From Q.26 to Q.55: It will carry two marks each where subtotal will be 60 marks. For every wrong answer, 2/3 marks will be deducted.

3) From Q.48 to Q.51: These questions will be common data questions. Each question will be two marks and for each wrong answer, 2/3 marks will be deducted.

4) The Question pairs Q.52, Q.53 and Q.54, Q.55 will be linked answer questions where answer to the second question of the last two pairs may depend on the answer to the first question of the pair. If you provide wrong answer of the first question in the linked pair or not attempt the question, the second question will not be evaluated. It will carry two marks each.

5) For Q.52 and Q.54, 2/3 marks will be deducted for wrong answer and there is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.

6) From Q.56 to Q.60: General aptitude questions will carry one mark each. So there will be sub-total of 5 marks and for each wrong answer, 1/3 marks will be deducted.

7) From Q.61 to Q.65: It will carry two marks each where the sub-total will be 10 marks. For every wrong answer, there will be deduction of 2/3 marks.

All the papers with AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI and TF will contain few questions on Engineering Mathematics that carry 15 marks.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and Government of India.

The GATE committee, which comprises of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring the results.

Some institutions specify GATE qualification as mandatory even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Top rank holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR.
